Is it the view or the garden that welcomes the Mediterranean warmth into this space? We would argue its both. A client that lets us embrace the story in the environment makes for a better garden—which is why this one is easy to love.
With a mild to medium micro-climate found frequently in Sandgate, it gave us the opportunity to deliver a planting style that wasn’t ‘safe’, but climate friendly. With natural springs underneath and a connection to the sea, lemon and olive trees are supported without hassle. They provide texture, symbolism, shade, scent and calm. Creeping thymes are what you see pictured growing on the ground, it’s a beautiful solution to create ‘grass’ that you can walk on—barefoot, without ever having to cut it all year round. Instead, it blooms with flowers when its in season.
This project has 3 tiers as it spans as a seafront property. The sloping space was challenging and required ground extensions. We worked in phases by building a new upper tier patio with lighting— fit for various activities, such as working from home, outdoor dining, entertaining and barbecues. Then to steps that led to the upper lower tier, lined with grapevines, scented plants and natural seating amongst lemon and olive trees. This space lets you escape from above and immerse into a separate paradise, where you can’t be seen or disturbed.
The final lower tier is still pending to be built with a hidden office and vegetable beds. Completed with a water collection system to easily hydrate plants in extreme heat.

A Mediterranean garden is largely low maintenance; what it needs is patience. For clients with busy lifestyles, this is suitable. Its a garden you can dip into when you need to escape to the Med in your mind. Its just as pleasant when hosting friends, as we can build a viewing platform where you can place your beautiful furniture, or the trusty barbecue and pizza oven.
If you need a little help, then having an aftercare plan with us would ensure it would be ready to use whenever you need it.

It varies on the size of the garden, economic climate in supplies, and desired scale. We work with client budgets and if we feel that a design can be enhanced, such as the Mediterranean garden, then we would look to either work in phases throughout the year or let you build the budget you would like to work with to have the design ready for a certain deadline.
Each phase must be paid for with a deposit before work starts.
The current garden shown had its own unique material and labour costs. Sharing the price would not reflect the prices of these variables today. We advise clients to book a consultation for a bespoke design by Daniel and breakdown of material costs.
